Manor house. Early C17 building on site of C13 building with
late C17 alterations and C19 service wing. Built of Isle of
Wight stone rubble with tiled roof to north front and slate
roof to south front and east wing. 2 storeys. Gable ends with
kneelers and finials. North front has 3 windows, double stone
mullioned windows with hood moulding. The principal feature is
a massive projecting stone chimneybreast with half-gable with
kneelers to either side with c.1675 brick top of 5 arches with
keystones and impost blocks and 5 restored octagonal stacks
above. Left side C18 projecting porch with hood moulding and 4
centred arch with double door. South front was originally the
entrance front. 5 windows. Late C17 cross windows with leaded
lights. 2 storey C17 projecting porch with gable having stone
coping, kneelers and finial. Gable has cross window with hood
moulding above and shield. Ground floor has obtusely arched
doorcase with dripmould. Right hand side has C19 4 centred
arched door. East wing is C19 service wing. 5:7 cambered
casements with brick dressings. Great Hall has stone fireplace
with 4 centred arch. Library has elaborate carved overmantel
of c.1685 with central panel of Meux coat of arms and carvings
of warlike accoutrements including surrounds, spears and drums
similar to the overmantel at Merston Manor (see Arreton
Parish). This is one of the original Domesday Manors of the
Isle of Wight forfeited by Roger de Breteuil to the king after
his rebellion in 1085 and later held by the de Kingstons and
Meuxs.
