Ornamental gateway to mansion. Late C18 by James Wyatt in
Roman style. Built of Isle of Wight stone ashlar with Portland
stone dressings and cast iron gates. Comprizes large
round-headed carriage arch with keystone bearing heraldic
beast and fluted impost blocks. At the top is a frieze with
modillions and fluting and projecting end portions with 5
anthemions supporting paired engaged Roman Ionic columns.
Plinth. Patera and swag moulding on each side of arch.
Round-headed pedestrian entrances each side of gateway with
pilasters and a section of wall ramping up to centre on each
side. Fine cast iron gates to all 3 arches with square rails,
midrail with circular floral motifs and spikes at base and top
curved in the opposite direction to the stone arch and with
anthemion decoration. The park side is identical but with
pilasters in place of columns. A scheduled Ancient Monument.
