Also known as: Fort Redoubt Tea Rooms GATE LANE.
Former fort, converted into tea rooms. c.1861 altered C20.
Part of Palmerstonian coastal defences, its purpose to guard
the only good landing beach on the south side of the Isle of
Wight against enemy invasion. This comprizes a deep brick
lined ditch with a drawbridge on the north side. A 2 storey
residential 24 man caponier at the North West end guarded both
ditches and entrance. This of brick rendered with rendered
slate roof but was roofless at time of survey. Beneath the
western rampart were bomb proof casements for stores and
ammunition. The building on the central parade ground was
replaced in 1936 by a civilian 2 storey house.
