Formerly known as: Hill Cottages GATCOMBE. House, formerly 2 cottages and at one time the parish bake house. 2 builds, right hand part mid C17 refronted in C18, the left hand part C18. Right hand part of coursed Isle of Wight green sand rubble with ashlar quoins and red brick dressings. Left hand part red brick in English bond. Thatched roof, half-hipped to right side and hipped to left side. 2 brick chimneystacks on ridge. 1 1/2 storeys; 2: 4 windows. Large eyebrow containing 2 dormers with C19 triple casements. C19 casements to ground floor. Right side thatched porch on wooden supports. Rear elevation has deep plinth, the end bay of stone then brick in English bond. Lean-to with slate roof. Parlour has spine beam with 2 inch chamfers and an ovolo stopped by tongue stop. The former kitchen is on the extreme left and has an arched dome shaped bread oven. Wooden chamfered beam above and flagstone floor. Roof has principal rafters and clasped purlins. There were 4 bread ovens in this house so it was probably the parish bake house.
