GV II

House. c1873. For the Furness Railway Co. Squared, red
sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings; slate roof. T-shaped
plan, 2 storeys. Tall, gabled crosswing on left: large quoins,
2-light window with shouldered lintel beneath relieving arch.
1st floor: 2-light window has curved heads and is recessed in
pointed-arched panel; ashlar gable copings with plain kneelers
and finial. Main range to right is altered and now has door
within glazed and slated lean-to porch; 2-light window to 1st
floor left and original slit over porch. Stone gutter blocks,
truncated end stack on right and tall stack with offsets at
junction with crosswing. Left return: single-light window
under relieving arch on left of window as front. Built as
coachman's house to serve the company's Furness Abbey Hotel.
The original coach house and stables demolished apart from a
wall to the north and a small single-storey building to the
west. Included for group value.
