Technical Institute, now Art School. Built 1898-9. Thomas
Shelmerdine. Red brick, dressed stone, slate roof. 2
storeys. 5 bays. 1st bay is canted with gable, end 3 bays
recessed. Ground floor flush lintel band, 1st floor, sill
course and top frieze and cornice. 1st bay has high 3:4:3
light windows in stone band, last 3 bays have 2-light
windows with 2 transoms. 2nd bay entrance has granite Ionic
aedicule with rusticated columns, pulvinated frieze and
segmental pediment with complete fanlight in tympanum. 1st
floor has parapet, raised over windows to 1st and 2nd bays;
3:4:3-light and 5-light windows with transom. End 3 bays
have cross windows. 1st bay has lunette with triple key and
stone banding. 2nd bay has top inscription: "TECHNICAL
INSTITUTE" with foliage. Iron railings to right of entrance.
