House. Early C17, C18, and C20. Timber-framed, rendered and
colour washed with peg-tiled roof. Plan rectangular but
originally L-shaped, with main range and cross-wing to E.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. All the exterior windows are C20
replacement and all have diamond leaded casements. Some
windows set into C18 window frames with moulded architraves. S
front ground floor, C20 porch at junction of main range and
cross-wing. To W window in an C18 frame, French door, window
in extension. To E 2 windows fitted between studding of
cross-wing with central French window. Central porch, gabled
with front and side light, boarded door with diamond lights.
First floor, small window over porch and to W 3 windows.
Second window in C18 frame. To E, 6 windows fitted between
studding of gable and a central window within C18 frame. Gable
projects over with C20 barge-board. 2 stacks, one in line with
porch and one on W end gable. Rear N elevation. E and W
gables, flat-roofed 2-storey C20 extension between. Central
porch, timber and brick, gabled, diamond leaded side lights
and door glazed with glazing bars, 3x5 panes. Stack on N end
of E gable in English bond. Windows irregular, ground floor
metal casement to E of porch and 2 small windows in E
cross-wing W of porch, one single and one double light
casements. Boarded 'stable' door and 2-light casement in W
extension. First floor windows, one on E gable, 2 on W gable
and one on central range.
INTERIOR: E cross-wing of superior build of 2 bays. Ground
floor 2 rooms, S room with ovolo-moulded bridging joist and N
room has lamb's tongue stopped chamfers. Joists of both rooms
diminished haunched soffit tenons - set upon wall clamps.
Evidence of windows on S and N ends. N one had major and minor
mullions (probably ovolo type) First floor of cross-wing -
internal corner tension bracing double nailed across studs and
face halved and bladed scarf in W wall plate. Main range early
C17, 2 bays and chimney bay. Ground floor central room,
slender joists, bridging joist with lamb's tongue chamfer
stops. First floor W room, N wall has mullion holes for
5-light window with shutter groove. Shutter groove also on
opposite wall. Internal corner down bracing. Face halved and
bladed scarf joint. Between cross-wing and main range are back
to back fireplaces and stack (rebuilt) apparently contemporary
with timber frame. Small window over front porch in line with
stack on site of original window for closet that led off the
upper chamber of the cross-wing but was sealed off from the
chamber to W in main range. In the C18 the W cross-wing was
added on N side and a rear ground-floor lean-to built between
both cross-wings. C20 work includes the raising of the lean-to
to 2 storeys. Some of the C18 tie-beams and studding remain
within. The early C17 cross-wing and main range are
contemporary and used the lobby entrance form although not
symmetrical but still a medieval shape. The closet with window
over the entrance is commensurate with this post medieval
house form. Framing and jointing of cross-wing and main range
are identical. Only the shape and high level of decoration
distinguishes the cross-wing from the main range.
