Description

THETFORD

TL8782 OLD MARKET STREET
617-1/8/182 (North East side)
03/06/93 No.23

II

House, now offices. Late C16, refaced early C20, and with
c1700 rear wing. Brick front and render to timber-frame with
ashlar and flint rear wing with brick dressings. C20 clay tile
roof with brick ridge and end stacks. L-plan. 2 storeys and
attic; 2-window range. Gable facing to left. 6/6 sash in gable
section, 2-light casement to right. Entrance to left has
re-used C18 doorcase with pilasters, sections of triglyph
frieze and open pediment. Two 6/6 sashes to right. 2-light
casement in mock framed gable. Rear wing has 10/10 sash, 2-
and 3-light casements and 2 dormers. Within the walling are
numerous carved and moulded pieces of limestone which can be
identified as having belonged to a Romanesque building of
c1140. INTERIOR: late C16 block retains frame of heavy
scantling and its roof structure which is of the clasped
purlin type with reduced principals. End bay largely replaced
when c1700 block added. This roof very much obscured but has
wind bracing and the principal rafters appear to have been cut
back in situ. Fine bolection-moulded chimneypiece at first
floor.
