Description

SU 94NE GUILDFORD PORTSMOUTH ROAD (East Side) 3/183 Nos 5 to 8 (consec) The Valley GV II Cottage row. Circa 1880 possibly by R. Norman Shaw. Red brick below on plinth to right, where ground drops away; timber framed gable to left with whitewashed render infill, scalloped tile hanging to first floor centre. Plain tiled roofs, half- hipped to right. Two storeys with larger cross wing to left end. Four-square ribbed ridge stack to centre with further stacks to re-entrant angles and corbelled stacks to rear. Left hand gabled wing jettied on first floor with end braces and moulded bressumer, further jetty above where gable projects on brackets with diagonal boarding, wavy-edged bargeboards and small wrought-iron finial to gable apex. One projecting 4-light window on corbels to first floor of wing, mullioned and transomed 5-light window below. Right hand wing half-hipped with one mullioned and transomed 4-light window on the first floor and one mullioned and transomed canted bay window below under diagonal brick dentil string course. One mullioned and transomed first floor window either side of centre, 2-light windows to angle re-entrants. Canted oriel window on braces to ground floor left of centre, two mullioned and transomed windows under cambered heads to right of centre. Doors to left and right in angle re-entrants with diagonal boarding to upper panel and chamfered surrounds - (Nos 6 and 7). Further doors to ends, that to left (No 5) in pentice with diagonal brick eaves course. Large tile-hung gable on right hand return front. R. Norman Shaw built a number of houses on the Portsmouth Road, although A. Saint regards The Valley as being more likely the work of one of his pupils.
