Former Inn, now house. C17. Timber frame refaced with red brick; tiled roof, ridge
stack to left, end stack to right. 2 storeys; mixed fenestration, casements and
sashes, 4 across the first floor. Central plank door with margin lights under hipped
roof porch on wooden supports. Catslide extension to left and rear. When it was the
Fox Inn - Edward Banks, contractor of The Croydon, Mertsham and Godstone Iron Railway
the first public railway in the world, met local gentry to wager on the first trial
run of the railway in July 1805.
