BRENTWOOD.
House. C17, altered in C19. Timber-framed, early C19 facade of
red brick in Flemish bond, remainder weatherboarded with some
roughcast rendering. 3-bay range facing N with axial stack at
each end.
2 storeys. Early C19 2-storey one-bay wing to rear left, and
late C19 single-storey extension beyond. Ground floor, 2 early
C19 sashes of 8+8 lights with flat brick arches. First floor,
one similar sash, and one C20 replacement of 6+6 square panes
in original aperture. Central doorway with early C19 simple
pilasters and moulded flat hood on double profiled brackets,
converted in C20 to full-height sash of 6+9 lights. C20 door
in small protrusion to left of left window. Plain parapet.
Late C19 perforated ridge tiles. Grouped diagonal shafts on
right stack, which is partly enclosed by No.3 which abuts at
this side (not listed). The left stack is of C16/17 bricks to
a height of approximately 2m, largely rebuilt or refaced
above. In front of the stack the wall aligns with its outer
surface; behind, the wall aligns with its inner surface. Some
roughcast render in gable.
INTERIOR: boxed transverse beam between left and middle bays,
unchamfered beam between middle and right bays. Chamfered
axial beam with lamb's tongue stops in right bay. One jowled
post is exposed. Cambered tie-beams. C20 grates. C17/18
garderobe on the first floor, in front of the left stack and
combined with it, seat bricked up, a rare survival. Shown in
an estate map of 1832 as the property of Mr Chaulk and
identified by the RCHM as item 14, Chalk's Farm.
