Description

ISLINGTON

TQ3183NE CROSS STREET
635-1/59/1034 (North side)
No.24 (Even)
and attached railings

GV II

Terraced house, shown on map of 1735, facade altered mid or
late C19 when adapted to industrial use and with rear
workshops of no special interest. Red brick, three storeys,
attic and basement; three bays wide. Two rooms per floor.
Ground floor and basement given new frontages with folding
doors. Upper floors retain original openings under gauged
brick heads and original shutters; rear elevation retains
curved window heads with nineteenth-century sashes in original
exposed boxes. C19 double-doors under square top light at left
of main facade lead to
Interior. Entrance hall with heavy modillion cornice,
pilasters to opening into broader stairwell hall with similar
cornice detail. Original staircase the full height of the
building, open string from ground-floor to second floor with
carved tread-ends and turned balusters (two per step) of
unusual elaboration with square bands and incised turned
pattern to largest knops; closed string stair to attic floor
with simpler, rather massive, turned balusters. Ground floor
rooms said to retain original cornices and perhaps some
panelling beneath false ceilings and later coverings. First
floor retains more elaborate modillion and dentil cornice to
front room and dado panelling to both; rear room with original
cupboard, its door on long hinges, in alcove next to chimney
breast. Second floor simpler with some dado panelling and
cupboard. Two cupboards in attic.
