Large house, now divided. Largely C18 with C19 alterations, with
C16 fragments at rear. Brick front with raised stone quoins, stone
band stone gutter and chamfered stone plinth: Hipped stone slate
roof with tall rendered ornamental stacks. Two storeys. 4-bay
facade with sash windows with raised stone sills. C19 canted bay
to left of doorway which has later pilastered doorcase. Above door
is attached 3-panel tablet with a motif, and words, 'SAY GOD BE HE(RE)'
and date 'IBM 1569'. Right side elevation partly of brick. One
late C18 type 3-light window to 1st floor. The left elevation has a
canted bay to right and a later lean-to extension above which is a
4-light double chamfered window, with early but re-leaded glass
probably of early C18 date. At rear are various altered openings
but to left, in outshut, is a part obscured window of round-arched
lights with sunken spandrels, all blocked, and altered with later
doorway. Above is an altered 5-light double chamfered window with
early (restored) glazing.
The house was taken as Miss Wooler's school in 1837 when Charlotte
Bronte was a teacher there and Anne Bronte a pupil. The earlier house
was used as a meeting house by followers of George Fox in the late
C17.
