and south of formal
garden at Broughton
Hall

GV II

Retaining wall, steps and fountain, 1855. By W A Nesfield. Low solid stone wall
to earth bank behind Broughton Hall, which runs for c 130m from Garden Pavilion
(qv) to a point west of the conservatory at the rear of the Hall. There are two
flights of stone steps, one at the western end which is quite simple and a double
set which accommodates a fountain with clam shell and dolphins. Urns stand on
dais at frequent intervals. Forms part of the semi-formal setting of Broughton
Hall and sets the boundary between the formal and the wilderness gardens.
