4/47 Gatehouse to west at Berkeley Castle

GV I


Outer gatehouse on west side of castle compound. C14. Pink and
grey Severn sandstone, random coursed and embattled with dressed
stone for triple moulded wide pointed archway to west side and
inset arch top. Remains of carved animal capitals on west. Shaped
timber double doors with porte-cochere to left and vertical applied
battens. Inner arch to east and simpler triple-moulded archway.
Small room in south wall with leaded window to east.
