12/57 AFFPUDDLE THE HOLLOW,
BRIANTSPUDDLE
(West Side)

No. 5 The Hollow

II

Cottage. Appears C17 origin. Plastered cob walls. Thatched roof. Brick stacks.
Original house of three-room and cross-passage plan. Modern wing at rear with
plastered walls and thatched roof. One storey and attics. Front wall buttressed.
Ledged door. Ground floor has two casement windows with glazing bars. Attic has
two half-dormers with casements with glazing bars. Internally, the 'lower end', a
large room has a brick chimney - probably a late insertion, and the roof appears to
have been reconstructed and raised. The 'hall' has a large cob chimney, backing on
to the cross-passage, with an open fireplace with oak lintel. Beyond the hall is a
small unheated service room and a spiral stair, probably in its original position.
The house appears to be of long-house form.
RCHM Monument 30.
