SS 81 SW
9/64 Nos 1 and 2 Penford Cottages

- II
4 small cottages in a row, now refashioned into 2 dwellings. Probably C18, altered
into 2 circa 1920. Rubble, gabled slate roof with wide eaves, 2 gable brick stacks
and 2 lateral stacks at rear with tall brick shafts.
Plan and development: probably 4-small single bay dwellings, altered circa 1920
into 2, each of these with a central hall and 2 flanking rooms, entrance halls with
straight-flight staircases, right room to right cottage on ground floor of full
height, first floor removed.
Exterior: 2 storeys, 3:3 windows, 2- and 3-light early C20 casements with leaded
lights, much medieval and later glass incorporated into these windows, very tall
easement to the right. 2 door openings, 1 to the centre of each dwelling, lean-to
porches with half-glazed doors.
Interior: the glass is the salient feature of the interior, some is medieval, some
C17 and some in early C20 quirky style with cherubs, ships etc. The remainder of
tne interiors have been completely refitted C20 with joinery and simple features.
Roof probably C18 with straight principals showing in the first floor bedrooms,
remainder of the ridge and rafters unseen.
