Description

EAST ANSTEY WADDICOMBE
SS 82 NE
2/13 Henspark Cottage
-
- II
Cottage, at one time in two occupations. Probably mid to late C17, with C19 and C20
alterations. Painted rendered stone rubble and some cob. Bitumenized slate roof
with gable ends. Axial stone rubble stack and rendered stone rubble stack at right
end.
Plan: C20 alterations have obscured the original plans, and it is unclear whether
the cottage was occupied for from outset as a single tenement. There are four rooms
in line, with direct entry into the room at the left end which is unheated and into
the third room from the left which comprises a wide entrance hall containing a C20
staircase. There are straight joints between the two left end rooms, suggesting the
axial stack was formerly at the left gable end, and between the centre rooms. The
roof structure has been replaced to the left of the straight joint, a late C17 roof
structure surviving over the right-hand section. It seems likely therefore that the
original core consists of the second room from the left, which has chamfered beam
and bressumers, the right-hand section apparently being rebuilt in the late C17 as a
separate cottage, the left-hand cottage being also extended at roughly the same time
by the addition of the extension of one room plan at the left end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 4-window range. Principally late C19 fenestration 3-light
casements, 2 and 3 panes per light. C20 door to left, early C20 door to right.
Interior: Roughly chamfered axial beam to left end room. Principal room has hollow
step stop chamfered cross ceiling beam and bressumers. Chamfered lintel to
fireplace which has brick-lined bread oven.
Room at right end has single chamfered cross ceiling beam with hollow step stops.
Two C17 trusses with straight prinicipals and pegged halved collars survive over
right-hand section, otherwise C20 roof structure.
