Pair of shops. Early C19 with later additions and alterations. Red
brick, slate roof with central stack immediately in front of ridge.
3 storeys, moulded plaster eaves cornice with fluted decoration;
2-window front, glazing bar sashes with gauged heads, replaced by C20
casement to upper right; C20 shop fronts; re-sited gate pier to centre;
plastered stone with round-headed niche below painted borough coat-of-
arms, fluted band to top interrupted by inscription "TOLL-THOROUGH";
small metal plaque above depicts Hercules carrying the world on his
shoulders. The building stands on the site of New Gate in town walls,
removed 1782 (information plaque). Similar gate piers (from former
Beatrice Gate) are incorporated in the revetment wall at Oswestry Castle
(q.v.).
