Description

BROADWOODKELLY BROADWOODKELLY
SS 60 NW
2/31 The Cottage
GV II
Small house. Early C16 with C17 alterations. Rendered and plastered cob walls.
Gable ended thatched roof. Projecting rendered rubble stack with brick shaft at
each end.
Plan: 2 room plan each room heated by end stack. The right-hand end at least was
originally open to the roof with a central hearth. The roofspace of the left-hand
end is inaccessible. Fireplaces and ceilings inserted in early C17.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front - the 2 right-hand ground floor
windows are C20 2-light small-paned casements. The 2 left-hand ones are similar but
probably C19 3-light C19 casement on 1st floor. Central C20 glazed door behind
contemporary open-fronted porch. C19 outshot at rear.
Interior: Right-hand room has heavy but roughly-finished cross beam. Left-hand
room has longitudual beam with deep chamfer.
Original roof survives with 2 pairs of face-pegged jointed crucks. The right-hand
one has a morticed slightly cranked collar and triangular strengthening block in
apex and mortices for threaded purlins. It is lightly smoke-blackened. The left-
hand truss cannot be seen in the roof space because of a full height partition.
