House with extension to rear now a separate cottage. Dated and inscribed over
entrance T & B B 1718 (Thomas and Barbara Backhouse). Painted stucco with eaves
cornice and raised V-jointed quoins. Graduated greenslate roof with brick
chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays with lower 2-bay cottage to right rear.
Top-glazed 4-panel door in bolection surround under swan-neck pediment enclosing
date and inscription. Sash windows in painted stone architraves. Extension has
round-arched sash staircase window with glazing bars. Smaller square sash
window to right. Gate Bridge Cottage continues under common roof. Lean-to
extension has 4-panel side door with C20 lattice porch. Small sash windows in
painted stone surrounds. Once the home of Woodcock Graves, writer of the song,
'D'ye ken John Peel'. See Hugh Machell, John Peel, 1926, p42, illustrated.
