Stable block. Early 1680's for John Harvey, reworked and converted for
accommodation 1938-40 by A S G Butler for Col G H Wells. Red brick with
hipped clay tile roofs. L-plan, one storey and attics. SE elevation has
1:3:2:3:1 window facade, the outer and central bays projecting forwards
slightly. Unbroken coved wood cornice to whole length. 10 mullion and
transom windows. Blocked area, probably originally a door, to centre of
central bay. 10 hipped dormers with 2-light casements, inserted at
conversion. All lights leaded. To centre is bell turret, with small copper
dome on 8 Tuscan columns. Surmounting weather vane formerly displayed Harvey
arms, but bears Bedford School crest since 1970's restoration. The bell is
inscribed "J.W. 1684" and thought to be by John Walton. The clock, dated
1683, is thought to be work of Thomas Tompion. Courtyard elevation: similar
fenestration, with integral red brick stacks inserted as conversion, and
archway to LH. NE block of 2 storeys and attics, converted to chauffeur's
house 1938-40, has 3 pairs double doors and variety of casements with leaded
lights.
