House in row. Late C18, altered in mid C19 and later.
Rendered, some brickwork to rear, slate roof. A 2-room plan in
which the central door originally led to the right-hand room
direct, but now with partition; the back has been extended and
modified.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 3 windows. Two C20 dormers with
casements above a wide canted 2-storey bay with 8:12:8-pane
sashes, with a cornice and fine fluted architrave. The first
floor has a blind central light with keystone, and to the
right is a 12-pane sash at each level, also with keystones.
The central 6-panel door has a vertical central bead (which on
the back of the door is in bead and reel), in an Adamesque
doorcase, including urn decorations said to be in pewter. A
small Portland stone plinth, blocking course but no parapet.
To the right is a lofty stack in Broadmayne brick. The rear
roof slope has been lifted, and is at a lower pitch than the
front, and there are C20 additions in brick.
INTERIOR: has a dogleg stair transversely behind the
right-hand room, with solid string, stick balusters, and
moulded handrail. The 2 main rooms have small moulded
cornices, doors are simplified 'carpenter's' 4-panel fielded,
and the fireplaces are mid to late C19. At the top floor,
flanking the staircase, is a plank and muntin partition,
probably of the C18. There are C20 roof-lights over the stair
and one back room. One first-floor fire surround has good
Victorian glazed tile cheeks.
This seems to have been an earlier property than most extant
in the street, but was substantially modified in the C19.
(RCHME: Dorset: South-East: London: 1970-: 346).
