Cottages and Marton Priory
(formerly listed as Marton
10.9.54 Hall and outbuildings)

Remains of manorhouse and barn, now in three occupations. Perhaps c.l6OO in origin,
much rebuilt, barn probably C19. The cottages are of rubble with stone slate roof.
Two storeys. Three windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor,
all C19 and mostly sashed, except for the central ground floor window which
is a 3-light square mullion and transom. At the rear, there is a 3-light
double-chamfered stone mullion window and a 3-light recessed square mullion
window. A fine stone doorcase is said to have come from Gledstone Hall. Three
stacks, one of which (at the southern end) has two good fireplaces, Tudor-arched
and basket-arched. The former barn breaks forward as a five-bay composition
based on its leftmost bay, which looks like the porch of a previous build.
The bay is quoined and has a large chamfered segmental arch. Above is a
4-light double-chamfered stone mullion window with hood-mould. The entry is
tunnel-vaulted. This bay is repeated as bay 5 and approximately as bay 3,
but with a 3-light recessed square mullion window. Bays 2 and 4 have similar
windows to the ground floor and pitch holes above.
