Gates, gateway, railings and 2 lodges. Early C18, probably by Daniel Garrett for Richard Shuttleworth, with C19 railings and gates. Ashlar sandstone with vertical parallel tooling, Welsh slate roofs; cast-iron railings and gates. Central entrance with carriageway flanked by pedestrian gates linked by wall with railings to side lodges. Gateway: central round- arched carriageway with archivolt and square responds with caps which continue as cornices over straight-headed side gate openings; 4 Roman Doric half columns support open central pediment and large Doric frieze over side gates, the cornice continuing into pediment; surmounted by 5 large urn finials, some damaged, the inner three with gadrooning. 2 main central gates (the northern one lying broken on the ground nearby at the time of resurvey): moulded bars, round-arched triple "arcading", the lower halves almost filled with decorative patterns, and with base rail with diapers and paterae, and elaborate scrolling across the top. Side gates: of similar design to main gates but without decorated base rail and top scrolling, and with bronze cresting to finial. Railings: low wall supporting railings which have round bars with decorative finials. Lodges: 1 storey, 1 bay: Roman Doric Venetian window set within round arch, the sills continued as band lining through with coping below railings; pediment, with inclined parapet above terminating in circular gable chimney. Rear elevations the same. Inner return sides of lodges: 4-panel door in rusticated quoined surround with raised extended lintel and large tripartite keystone. Moulded cornice. South lodge has extension to south, not of special interest. North lodge has extensions to north and east, not of special interest.
