Description

TL 4246 THRIPLOW LOWER STREET (East Side) 13/307 No. 21 (Bassetts) 22.11.67 GV II* Farmhouse, now a house. Mid C16 with late C16, C17 and C18 alterations and additions. Timber-framed and plastered with half hipped and gabled plain tiled roofs. Two storeys; three unit plan of four timber-framed bays jettied on both long elevations. Two gabled extensions with a common internal wall were added in late C16 and C17. Tall local brick rectangular planned ridge stack to right of centre; two stacks to left hand lower single storey C18 bakehouse and brewhouse. West elevation: Exposed jetty joists with solid curved braces at each bay, folded leaf and vine carved decoration to facias of right hand gabled extension. Main entrance to left of centre with plank door in segmental headed arch. Four ground floor windows of various sizes and five first floor windows including four horizontal sliding sashes. Interior: Exposed substantial timber-frame. Double ogee-moulded ceiling beams to hall, folded leaf design to beams in south room (qv The Manor House, Middle Street). Large fireplace with mantel beam and niches and small parlour fireplace in south room. Staircase possibly early C17 with C16 door at head of the stairs. Evidence for original shuttered diamond mullioned windows. Crown post roof. Farmhouse, possibly unheated, originally built as a guildhall or woolhall facing the green. R.C.H.M.
