Description

TG 2209 SE ROSEMARY LANE
(south-west side)
10/10014 Vaulted undercroft
under Flats 7 and 9
- II
Vaulted chamber dating from the early C16 with a late C16 or early C17 subsidiary chamber.
150 cm to apex of vault; roughly square plan of 150 cms to each side. Brick vaulting carried
on flint rubble walls. The chamber is set back approximately five metres from the Lane and was
probably associated with an unvaulted cellar that has since been destroyed. In the late C16 or
early C17 one half of the four-centred vault was removed and another arch inserted. In the
early Cl9 external access was provided, although the stairwell associated with it is now largely
infilled. Half of the chamber is found underneath ground-floor flat no. 7 Rosemary Lane, the
other half used to sit under no. 5, recently demolished. The mid C20 terraces which mark the
site of the vault are of no special architectural merit or interest.
