School and schoolmasters house now hotel with iron railings and gate-piers to front.
1877. By Silvanus Trevail. (Datestone and memorial plaque). Stone rubble, partly
rendered, with freestone dressings. Bitumen coated steeply sloping slate roof with
gable ends and projecting gables to main elevations. Roof with decorative C19 fish
scale slates and crested ridge tiles. Brick axial chimney stacks with side lateral
stack to schoolmaster's house.
Comprised 2 large school rooms arranged in a U-shaped plan with entrance near centre.
Right-hand wing further extended with cross wing containing schoolmaster's house of
2-room plan. Now divided into a series of hotel suites. Gothic style.
2 storey ranges with asymmetrically placed gables to form picturesque elevations to
harbour and Fore Street. Entrance with dressed freestone tower of 3 stages with
turret. Memorial plaque above entrance eroded but lists benefactors, architect and
date. Left-hand projecting wing overlooking harbour originally single storey with
triple lancets. Elevation to Fore Street with projecting gable on left and gable
near centre of elevation.
Interior with pitch pine panelling and doors and doorcases retained, some reset.
Decorative roof structures with principals pierced with quatrefoils.
Contemporary railings to front on Fore Street with 2 pairs of freestone gate-piers,
square in plan, rising to octagons with moulded copings.
Important elevations to harbour and Fore Street.
