Description

ST 72 88 WICKWAR HIGH STREET

9/272 NO 73

II

House at end of street row. Possibly C16, with considerable later modification,
including late C20 windows. Thin-bedded coursed Cotswold stone with some
ashlar quoins and insertions, all probably rendered originally, now strap-
pointed; roof slope has triple-roll tiles to street and pantiles to back,
brick stack front and rendered stack rear. This seems to have been part
of a hall house; a stack inserted off centre, right, and a further stack
in corner of room to left, at back. A large one-storey C20 across back.
Front is two storeys, 2 windows; Ground floor has C20 ranted bays to flat
roofs, with wood casements, and first floor two 9-pane sashes. Off-centre,
left a C20 glazed door. Right return, rendered, plain: possibly a later
enclosure. Back has 2-light dormer and various casements. Interior is
substantially altered, ground floor has rough beams chamfered and stopped;
right hand room with large rebuilt wood bressummer fireplace. C20 staircase.
Roof, in 3 bays has two pairs of raised crucks, formerly with arch-braced
collars, but both sets of arches have been cut through and removed; on
street front one wind brace remains in middle bay, and pair of braces at
back of same bay; further single brace in adjoining bay, and mortice remains
for brace in third bay. Two purlins, chamfered and stopped. Arch braces
and wind bracing are chamfered, and there are some remains of smoke blackening.
Many early rafters.
