Chapel of St John the
Evangelist (Creech)

Small chapel-of-Ease - formerly private chapel to Creech Grange. Built 1746 by
Dennis Bond, incorporating C12 chancel arch from East Holme Priory. Rebuilt C19
except for north transept. In "Norman" style. Ashlar stone walls, stone slate
roofs with coped gables - part re-covered in asbestos sheeting. Nave, chancel,
north transept south vestry. West tower. Square tower with smaller square turret
with open arches and pyramid roof on moulded cornice. Round-headed window to nave,
with shallow buttresses between. Triple east window. Internally, good C12 chancel
arch, of two orders with chevron and nailhead ornament. Jamb shafts with carved
capitals. Chancel windows have inner moulding in "Norman" style. Corbel table at
eaves. West doorway and tower arch incorporate some C12 stonework. Plastered
barrel ceilings to nave and transept. Boarded barrel ceiling to chancel.
