II GV

2. Includes Nos 39 and 41 West Hill Road. Picturesque group of former stables (now garage), circa 1855, presumably associated with Pembroke Hotel. 3 steep gables of painted brick with overhanging eaves and bargeboards, that to the left larger and spanning pointed-arch entrance to covered courtyard. No 5, probably accommodation for coachman, is a tall gabled 3-storey house of stucco, now with shop on ground floor. Entrance arch leads to large covered yard, polygonal-ended and roofed by big diagonal openwork struts starting low down; pitched skylight in centre. Similar entrance at other end emerges under steep gable on Westhill Road (Nos 39-41), accompanied by 5 smaller gables, also with overhanging eaves. Ground floor of both fronts has piers faced (presumably much later) with brown glazed tiles.

Nos 1 to 17 (odd) Pembroke Hotel, Nos 25 to 31 (odd), Nos 39 to 45 (odd) and Nos 2 to 34 (even) Poole Hill form a group with Nos 166 to 196 even Commercial Road, also the West Hill Road facades of Nos 1 to 11 (odd) Nos 17 to 21 (odd) and Nos 41 to 45 (odd) form a further group with The Pembroke Arms, West Hill Road.
