Description

SS 9422-9522 BAMPTON STATION ROAD, Bampton

14/70 Gates and standards to south east
25.9.83 entrance to churchyard of
St Michael's Church
GV II

Two gates and four standards. Late C19. Cast and wrought iron. Carriage gate
flanked by pedestrian gate, plain cylindrical standards inscribed 'C Davey and Sons
Bampton' with finials, carrying gates with curved top rail to low centre, and trefoil
bracing (main gate only) to verticals in three rows in augmentation - centre section
double and bottom section tripled. These gates, presumably to exclude stock from the
churchyard, are in fine almost original condition ; unlike those to Station Road
(q.v.) and Newton Square (q.v.), the pedestrian gate enclosure is formed by adjacent
walls and not by railings.
