Description

KNOWSTONE KNOWSTONE
SS 82 SW
3/26 Row of 6 cottages including Cluny
- Cottage and April Cottages
20.2.67 immediabdly west of Masons Arms
GV II
Row of 6 adjoining cottages. C17 but possibly earlier fabric concealed. Painted
rendered stone rubble and cob. Half-hipped thatch roof. 2 axial brick stacks,
rendered stack at right end and tall rendered lateral stack with tapered cap to rear
of Cluny Cottage.
Plan: row of 6 cottages, the largest at left of 2 rooms, April Cottage of single
room plan, Cluny Cottage to centre of 2 rooms, the left-hand room heated by rear
lateral stack and 3 cottages at right-hand end of single room plan each. Virtually
continuous outshut to rear of whole range. It is possible that April Cottage and
Cluny Cottage incorporate the core of a single original tenement but as interiors
were not accessible at time of survey, it was not possible to assess the
development.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Cottage at left end has 3 half dormers with tall 2-light
casements, 3 panes per light. Ground floor has a 3-light casements 2 panes per
light each side of plank door. C20 fenestration to April Cottage with single 2
light window on each floor to left of C20 door. To rear is a probably C18 2 light
window with rectangular leaded panes to upper storey. The 4 cottages to right are
recessed slightly. Cluny Cottage has two-2-light casements with rectangular leaded
panes, probably C18, above C20 door with similar window to right and C20 window to
left. Small cottage to right has C20 window on each floor to left of C20 plank door
while the 2 cottages at right end together have virtually symmetrical 3 window range
of 2 light casements 6 panes per light, with C20 door to left-hand cottage, and C19
plank door to right.
Interiors: not inspected.
