Description

SX 78 NW CHAGFORD

4/4 Batworthy Mill
-
GV II

Pair of grist mills. C18 and C19. Granite stone rubble with large roughly-dressed
granite quoins; slate roof.
Plan: pair of grist mills, 1 set either side of the mill race and 2 overshot water
wheels. Both mills comprise a basement, a stone floor and top storage floor. The
rear (north) of the mills are terraced into the steep slope and therefore can be
loaded from the terrace directly into the top floors. The left (western) mill is
probably C18 and is set a little forward from the right mill and was powered by the
front one of the 2 wheels.
Exterior: the front (south) end of the left (west) mill contains a ground floor
doorway and a window in the gable. The inner side has a 2-window front. None of
these windows contain window frames. To rear an open-fronted extension added in C19
to shelter loading and unloading. The front (south) end of the right mill contains a
first floor loading hatch with a gabled C20 hood and the 2 windows above are C20
casements without glazing bars, similar in the 2-window inner side. Both mills are
gable-ended.
Interior: both mills contain plain carpentry detail. The left (west) mill has a
probably C18 roof of pegged A-frame trusses and the right (east) mill has a mid-late
C19 roof of tie beam trusses with queen struts. The front wheel is C19 cast iron but
the machinery of the left (west) mill has been removed. The rear wheel is C20 and
the right (east) mill contains some cast iron machinery.
