Description

YARNSCOMBE
SS 52 SE
4/260 Gate house at Cogworthy
4.10.60
GV II

Gatehouse. C17 or earlier, C20 alterations. Mostly stone rubble with some cob;
slate roof, gabled at ends. East of and opposite the porch to Cogworthy, originally giving access to the former courtyard in front of the house. Small rectangular gatehouse, originally 2 storeys, with a large rectangular gateway. Smaller door on the inner (west) side leading to the remains of a stair. A small single-storey outbuilding, probably a later addition, adjoins the gatehouse on the north side. Exterior: Single storey. The outer (east) side has a chamfered stopped lintel to the gateway, similar lintel on the west side. In the centre, a richly-moulded C17 square-headed doorframe, the full width of the entrance. On the inner (west) side a doorway leads into a former stair which retains some treads and risers and an indication of the former floor level.
An unusual survival and important for group value with Cogworthy.
