Description

COLAN
SW 86 SE
6/7 Melancoose Mill
- II

Mill. Dated 1899, with some later alterations. Slatestone and elvan rubble with
granite dressings, quoins and plinth. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles and gable
end.
Plan: The main range is the original mill, with a waterwheel at the right side,
driven from a leat running from the rear of the mill. Probably early in C20, an
addition was made to front right.
Exterior: The main range is 2-storey, with the wing projecting to front right. To
left a round-arched granite doorway with imposts and keystone, pilasters and cornice.
Cambered arched window with dressed stone head to right and 2 similar windows above.
The front wing has an upper loading door in the gable end, double doors to the side
with corrugated iron cladding. The left end has granite segmental-arched window at
ground and first floor with the datestone 1899, set as a keystone to the upper
window. The right end has two 2-light casements at upper ground level, partly slate-
hung, with an overshot wheel to right. The wheel is cast iron, the launder carried
on stone piers with brick sides to the water channel. There is a straight joint to
the front wing to left, with 2 loading doors with shutters under the eaves. At the
rear there are double doors and window to left, and window at first floor. At the
upper level to left, there are 2 openings to the loft.
Interior: Not inspected.
