Grotto. Circa 1780. Granite with shell decoration. Round narrow arch with keystone
and voussoirs, jambs to sides faced with black volcanic pebbles and shells. Inside,
squared granite walls, the rear wall with a rounded arch, with a star pattern of
shells, not all shells remaining. Pool fed by spring in floor of grotto. Flight of
8 granite steps to right side; the grotto is built into a bank.
This grotto was formerly part of the Vicarage garden, (now known as King's Acre,
(q.v.)) now a separate property, Water Meadow. In style it resembles the Shell Slat
at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
