1/156 No 60

GV II

House with coachman's cottage. Circa early C19. Coursed granite and killas rubble
walls with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones and lintels. Scantle slate roof
with projecting eaves at the front. Brick chimneys over the gable ends adjoining
houses left and right and brick chimney over cross party wall between house and
cottage.
Double depth plan : 1 room wide cottage, left, with wide carriage entrance on the
right and a 2 rooms wide house on the right. The house has probably parlour left and
wider kitchen/living room right with cross passage between leading probably to a
central stair between 2 rear service rooms. The cottage has probably parlour at the
front and kitchen/living room behind.
2 storeys. Overall 4 window street front. Regular 1 window front of cottage left
and nearly symmetrical 3 window front of house, right. The cottage and house have
their original 16-pane hornless sashes. The cottage has smaller windows. The pebble
dash render over the ground floor window probably obscures a wooden lintel. The
carriage doorway, very close to the window on the right is spanned by a granite
lintel and has 2 ledged doors, the left hand door wider. The house has doorway
slightly left of middle with window over. Original 6-panel door with glazed top
panels.
Interior not inspected.
This house and cottage make an interesting comparison to No 5 Fore Street qv.
