HARESCOMBE, Brookthorpe,
STROUD ROAD (East side),
Farm buildings approx. 15m south of Mulberry Tree Hall

GV II

Group of farmbuildings. Mid to late C19. Coursed squared and dressed limestone, some brickwork, plain or double Roman tile roofs. An L-shaped range, with the shorter wing containing cow stalls adjacent to and parallel with the road, and the longer range having stable with loft, cider room, and dovecote; a small free-standing unit is sited to the south-east corner of the group. The shorter range has 3 casements to cambered heads with stone voussoirs to the road, and a series of plank doors and timber framed and boarded panels to the farmyard. The range facing the house has 2 plank doors and a doubled plank door to the cider room, and small casements to cambered heads, with a stone end gable. Facing the yard are various plank doors and casements to cambered heads, and the higher central unit has a face gable over a series of dove openings. To the right are plank doors divided by broad piers in blue engineering brick. The free-standing unit possibly from the late C18, formerly an open cart-shed, has a pantiled roof on ashlar gable walls, with plank doors the full width of the sides. Interior: the cow stalls retain timber divisions and a full-length feeding trough, and the cider room, at the outer corner of the group, has a complete and workable cider mill with stone wheel and harness (an exceptionaly rare survival) and an apple press; this room has a cobble floor. At the outer end are 5 horse boxes to early timber partitions. Group value with Mulberry Tree Hall (qv) and also included for the exceptionally complete and significant survival of the cider press.
