7/208 Garden Battery

GV II

Artillery battery of 7 guns, for coastal defence, later adapted as a saluting
platform and as a garden feature. 1863. Granite. Crescent shaped structure of
coursed rockface granite with plinth, cornice and terminal piers. 7 gun ports with
voussoir heads now blocked. Saluting terrace above with balustrade with French
Republican cannon. 5 steps behind leading down to garden. Small square structure
of unknown purpose at south end of terrace. This has a dome supported on 4 piers.
A part of the defences of Plymouth as improved by Lord Palmerston in the mid C19.
Building cost £7,804.
