3/40 Nos 1 and 2 Salmon Cottages

GV II

Pair of attached houses. Dated 1849, with few later alterations. Slatestone rubble
with stone dressings. Slurried slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends,
axial stack.
Plan: pair of 2-room plan houses, with the entrance to No 1 to left and to No 2 to
right. Each house has one room to front and one to rear, with entrance leading to
passage and stair hall. Each front room heated by back to back fireplace from the
axial stack.
Exterior: 2 storeys and 2 windows, original fenestration; first floor has two 20-pane
sashes with stone segmental heads. Ground floor has half-glazed door to left,
blocked door and 20-pane sash; to right a 20-pane sash and C20 door, all ground floor
openings with stone segmental heads. At first floor, central datestone with raised
carved star, date 1849 and raised carved salmon.
