GV II
Barn. Circa 1850. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Half-hipped slate roof
with lead rolls to hips and ridge.
Plan: Barn with cow-house at ground floor; built into the bank at the rear, with a
loft at first floor level; at the rear there is the pit for a water-wheel, driven by
water brought on an aqueduct with granite piers and a wooden launder. Probably used
for threshing and grinding grain. There is a later C19 lean-to addition at the left
side.
Exterior: 2 storeys, ground gloor has band courses in dressed granite, stepped down
to left with the slope of the ground. End right has door and C20 light, with 6-pane
light over; 5 bays to left at lower level, with central double doors, single door to
each side and ventilation slit to each outer side. First floor has central large
double loading door, smaller loading door to each side; pentice slate hood across the
whole front. Straight joint to left to the lean-to, of one storey with loft, door
with granite lintel at ground floor and ventilation slit to the loft. Right side
built into the bank with door leading into the loft. The rear has door with pentice
hood, opposing the main loading door, with external stone steps. 2 former doors to
left, with granite lintels. Ventilation slit at lower level to right. Wheel pit,
built of larger blocks of granite, to the left of the door, the main shaft of the
wheel remaining. Row of 3 granite monoliths along the rear left of the barn, which
would have carried a wooden launder.
Interior: Not accessible.
This is a good example of a barn in a modest planned farmyard of the mid C19. The
barn faces the farmhouse, and the outer sides of the yard are enclosed by a linhay
and a stable. The aqueduct for the waterwheel must have carried a leat for a
considerable distance, as there does not appear to be a water source nearby.
