ST NEOT ST NEOT
SX 16 NE
9/140 The Post Office
-
GV II
House, now house with shop. Late C17, with additions of C18 and C19 and some C20
alterations. Painted stone rubble. Asbestos slate roof with gable ends and gable
end stacks with rubble shafts and slate weathering.
Plan: Originally 2-room plan with central entrance to passage, each room heated by
gable end stack. Probably in the C18, a 2-storey gabled bay was extended at the
front of the room to right, and a 2-storey wing of one-room plan added to the rear
right and rear left, each of one-room plan, heated by gable end stack. At some
point, the house was in 2 occupations, and a second stair was inserted in the rear
right wing; the early stair is to rear of the entrance passage, probably not the
original stair side. Probably in the C19, the front of the passage was extended, and
a ground floor bay added to the front of the room to left; also a shop front was
added to the front of the extended bay to right, with entrance directly into the shop
in the room to right.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 3-window front. Room to left has 4-pane sash with
sidelights in the ground floor bay, with pitched roof over; 12-pane light at first
floor. 2-storey lean-to at the front of the passage, with C20 porch and 4-pane sash
at ground and first floor. The gabled bay to right has canted shop front with plate-
glass windows and half-glazed door, 4-pane light at first floor. Left side blind;
the 2-storey rear wing has half-glazed door and gable end stack. Right side has
external stack; 4-pane light at first floor to left. Rear wing has half-glazed door,
4-pane light at ground and first floor and gable end stack.
Interior: The front left room has chamfered cross beams; end fireplace with rubble
jambs and chamfered timber lintel with oven to rear right. All walls at ground floor
are stud partitions. The rear left room in the wing has a slate floor.
Roof: At first floor, the feet of the principal rafters are boxed in. The principal
rafters are crossed at the apex and pegged, with cambered collars. Later roof,
constructed above the original trusses.
