Cottage, probably beginning of C19, converted by larger extension
(placed back-to-back) circa 1840 into a substantial house. Cottage of
brown brick in English garden wall bond with gabled grey slate roof
and broad chimney (abutting the later extension) has a symmetrical
gable front with blocked, arched doorway to Birchdale Road. Of 2
storeys with 12-pane sash above former doorway and a 20-pane sash (5
panes wide) on each storey to each side. The extension, much altered,
is of 2 storeys with symmetrical 3-bay front of red brick and hipped
grey slate roof with symmetrical chimneys; plaster plinth, first-floor
band and Doric eaves-cornice; 8-panel door (2 upper panels glazed)
under looped radial-bar fan in round-arched Roman Doric case of
plaster with open pediment; 12-pane sashes to upper storey; mid C20
bow window under swept slate roof to each side of door; extension (in
keeping) to left.
