Description

MIDDLEWICH C.P. CHESTER ROAD
SJ 66 NE North Side

1/27 Gates and Railings to
Middlewich Cemetery

GV II

Cemetery gates and railings, probably 1859, made by Button of Crewe,
cast iron on stone plinth. Recessed gateway has central pair of
carriage gates, canted side screens, a pedestrian gate to each side
and quadrant wings leading to straight railing to front of cemetery.
Square iron openwork piers with ornate finials; ornate panels with
quatrefoils, fleurs-de-lys, arrows and cusping. A rare example of its
period to have survived the removal of ironwork for steelmaking during
the second world war. Included for group value.
