The Monks Well

Eye catcher. C19 of coursed rubble and ashlar consisting of ruined
wall with an archway and a cross on the northern tip of a small
quarry. The northern wall of the quarry has a three-quarter circular
cell carved into the rock with a cambered lintel to its doorway
(called the hermit's cell). To the right of this is a water trough
with a spout above it. On the lip of the quarry above is a portion of
broken wall with a buttress at left and a pointed archway to the
right. To the right of this is a cross on a base of two steps, the
upper one of which is carved with C18 or early C19 schoolboy graffiti
showing initials carved within the outline of the soles of boots. The
C19 cross above has chamfered edges and is inscribed ST. on
CRISPIN
the southern side and MCDXV on the northern face.
