TUSHINGHAM CUM GRINDLEY C.P. CHESTER ROAD A41 SJ 54 lilt (East side) 3/82 The Blue Bell Inn. 1/3/1967 II Inn, 1667, altered, of oak small framing partly pebbledashed and with insertions of rendered brickwork. Early C20 extension to left with pebbledashed brick lower storey and timber-framed upper storey with pebbledashed panels. Grey slate roof of steep pitch. C17 part of main block is of 2 storeys and 3 windows, almost symmetrical; a lower 2-storey cross-wing to right is pebbledashed, but with oak truss on gable and small framing in rear part of right side with brace beneath eaves exposed. The rear, replaced in brick to 1st floor, has small framing above with braces beneath eaves. Exposed part of old left end-gable has angle-strut truss. 2-storey gabled porch has shaped corner posts on stone bases, jettied upper storey on shaped braces, with rose, door of 4 wide boards of oak on shaped wrought iron hinges in massive ovolo-moulded oak frame, the lintel inscribed (in a crude shield) EN: 1667. Mullioned casements under basket arches; those right of door to lower storey (with billet moulding to top rail) and left of door to upper storey are ancient, as is shutter to window left of door. Bracing beneath eaves to each side of porch. replaced bargeboards. Large brick chimney behind ridge opposite porch. Mounting block attached to front, left of porch. Interior: Oak stair (immediately inside porch) has winders through 180°, square newel, shaped rail and shaped splat balusters. Stop-chamfered oak beams in cross-wing and front room of main wing. Oak broad-board door to left room, wrought iron hinges and latch. Some oak beams upstairs, but no framing exposed.
