Parish Church. C14 and 15 restored C19. Stone, lead roofs with
plain parapets. Embattled W. tower of 3 stages with diagonal
buttresses. Unaisled nave, S. porch; 3 windows, that to W. of
porch C14 with reticulated tracery, 2 on the E. Perp. style. S.
doorway has old door with original iron work. Chancel rebuilt
C19. Roodloft staircase to N. of chancel arch. Interior: pulpit
late C17 or early C18. Monuments under the altar a series of
black marble stones to the Chester family; on the S. wall are some
fragments of brasses to the de Broughton family C14-15, and on the N.
wall a C17 monument to Thomas Duncombe, a panel surrounded by an eared
architrave and broken segmental pediment. Wall Paintings in the nave,
c1400, a remarkable series, restored by Prof. Tristram 1930's.
On the S. wall,large St. George and Dragon, N. wall has a Doom and a
Pieta designedas a sermon against swearing. Stained glass. Chancel E.
and S. windows 1894 by Kempe. A nave S. window 1864 by A. Gibbs.
(Graded I for wall paintings).
