Once a coaching inn, with stabling for horses for the crossing of Kirkstone
Pass. Typical local style and materials, in prominent hill-top position,
now C19 in character. Slate walling with moulded eaves cornice on wood
brackets, 3 storeys. Middle portion has 5 12-paned sash windows, with
an ornate iron verandah over ground floor of barley-sugar columns and Composite
capitals, fretted cornice and ornamented spandrels, and an ornamented railing.
Square iron porch over entrance, with gable/pediment and pointed arches.
A wing to the south has 3 windows, the centre projecting slightly with
an open pediment and quoins. A 4-storeyed square tower to north has quoins
and 2-light windows. Exclude later extensions to north.
