Description

PAYHEMBURY
ST 00 SE
3/105 Higher House (formerly listed as
Sunnyside)
22.2.55
GV II

House. Mid C19, maybe earlier origins. Plastered stone rubble, with cob; stone
rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: L-plan house built alongside the churchyard. The main block faces onto the
village green to the south-east. It has a 2-room plan, one each side of a central
entrance hall and rear staircase. These are the principal rooms and they are heated
by end stacks. A slightly lower 2-room plan service block projects at right angles
to rear of the right (north-east) end. The first rear room is the kitchen and it
has a lateral stack on the outer (churchyard) side. The interior of the house was
not available for inspection at the time of this survey and therefore it is not
known whether it contains any evidence of earlier origins. However the owner
reported no carpentry detail exposed. House is 2 storeys.
Exterior: attractive symmetrical 3-window front of original timber 2-light
casements with glazing bar patterns dominated by the margin panes. Central doorway
contains original 6-panel door with an overlight and contemporary elliptical headed
porch supported on slender turned posts. The roof is hipped each end.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although the
owner reported that there was no exposed carpentry and that the joinery detail was
mostly C19 including a stick baluster stair.
Higher House is one of a group of listed buildings in the village.
